Getting Started

Pre-Class Equipment Confirmation

You will need a computer with a webcam, and Internet connection, in order to participate in your course.  Because of differing standards among web browsers, the optimal Collaborate experience for all users is with Google's Chrome browser.  Chrome supports all of the functionality necessary to run a full-featured Collaborate session through its support of WebRTC.

The following link provides an overview of how Blackboard Collaborate Ultra works, outlines equipment requirements, and provides the ability to test with your computer before your first class.

General Tips
  • Login to your on-line course at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
  • Internet bandwidth conservation -  Please be aware that any applications / services that run on your computer can impact your performance when using Blackboard Collaborate. iTunes, Facebook, Spotify, and Pandora are each examples of applications that can dramatically impact your Internet performance, even if they are running in the background. It is strongly suggested that you stop any running programs when participating in an online course.
  • Turn on your web cam when entering the class and turn your microphone on, only when called upon. Keeping your microphone muted until you are talking reduces the potential for echo and other background noises from disrupting the on-line course.
  • The use of a headset is recommended when participating in your on-line course.  Using built-in, or external speakers may cause your microphone to pick up the sound from your speakers and result in feedback (or echo) that can disrupt the session.

If you experience an issue related to accessing your course on-line, we ask that you create a help ticket using the Student Tech Help link under My World in the Cooley Portal.   This ensures that we have the proper information to follow up on your request.  For immediate help, you can call 1-517-371-5140, ext. 3300
